Vaginismus makes penetrative activity painful and unbearable for many women. Yet, Australian health professionals believe only a small fraction of those affected are diagnosed. In South Asian communities, stigma around sex keeps many in the dark about the fact that help is available.
For Gemma-Jayde Naidoo, who plays the protagonist, Amy, the film was an eye-opener:
I honestly hadn't even heard the word. I knew some people didn’t have a good time and some people experienced pain, but I didn’t understand the depth of it.
Kalyani Nagarajan, who plays Vivie—the larger-than-life character guiding Amy’s journey—believes Vivie is helping open up taboo conversations:
I think that because diaspora is growing, there are more voices making risque, taboo content. It’s about taking that step without asking for permission.
