How to pass yourself off as a hipster cook

Hipsters are at once omnipresent and elusive, they seems to be everywhere, yet the moment you address them as such, they disappear, never admitting to being one of the fold, as Samuel Johnson has been discovering in his series, Hipsters (Tuesdays 8:30pm on SBS 2). But what can't be denied is the delicious diet of the hipster, varied in extremes, it may range from a cold-pressed kale juice to a slow-smoked brisket burger. Here, we guide you through some favourites among the bearded set, should you ever need to cook for a hipster, or suddenly discover you are one yourself.

Let's ease in with the most obvious, kale chips, or in this case, . These are going to endow you with some hipster cred. It's this or a tattoo, so if you're against needles and triangles, crank that oven. This recipe is from Matthew Evans, who is perhaps the original hipster. Think about it, people, he grows his own food, loves to , and he's not afraid of a knitted vest.

If there are two things that go together in the hipster culture, it's top-knots and tacos. Hipsters have an affinity with many excellent Mexican foods, but the taco is the recipient of the most ardent love. These have the added bonus of being vegetarian. Serve with craft beer, naturally.

Your typical hipster is a DIY-er, from home butchery to customising hats with feathers and beads. Some of these projects are quite involved, but for the every day hipster, one of the more approachable kitchen tasks is making a pickle. Next to the pickles and the kombucha in the hipster fridge, will be the ubiquitous Rooster brand of sriracha sauce. But what do you do when your beloved brand of hot sauce is in short supply thanks to a ? You make your own, of course, and serve it with these .

If it can't be sold from the back of a (food) truck, then it's not on the hipster menu. Thus, burgers abound and this delicious, towering  also ticks the American diner box with its side serve of fried onion rings. Delectable.

When hipsters aren't drinking cold-pressed juice, cold-drip coffee, craft beer or kale shakes, they're slurping down a creamy, luscious milkshake, diner-style. Milkshakes and their place of purchase, the milkbar, are cool. The hip set, however, haven't settled for the corner store Cottee's toppings and have upgraded this with flavours of the famed pie.

Saviour of the gluten-intolerant and salad-plumper of the decade, quinoa is a hero among us all. Always quick to spot a new ingredient on the edge of the mainstream, quinoa has been a hipster staple for quite some time. But now that everyone else is loving the super seed, its days are likely numbered among hipsters. Enjoy it while it's still cool in this beautiful .

Hipsters love a good forage, it appeals to their DIY nature. Unfortunately, for many urban-dwelling hipsters, foraging is limited to the local greengrocer. When let loose into the country, though, they can create some of the loveliest, wholesome meals with nettles and other such plants. This is enough to make a hipster's heart sing.
