In Italy, pizza is serious business - but still, a court case about pizza?

Even more surprising, a court case involving a divorce settlement.

A court in Italy has ruled in favour of a man who tried to his pay child support in pizza.

The 50-year-old Villafranca Padovana resident was unable to meet the €300 (AU$465) a month payments to his ex-wife from the earnings of his ailing pizzeria. He therefore offered to pay at least some of the sum in the form of his shop-made pizzas instead - an offer which the woman rejected.

However, when the father was taken before a court in Padova in the country’s north east for failing to transfer his monthly child support payment – the value of which had been determined in their divorce - a female judge ruled to acquit the man.

According to , presiding justice Chiara Bitozzi said that although there was evidence the man had clearly failed to make the payments to his ex-wife, she couldn’t ignore his restrictive financial situation and inability to amass the sum.

Given that he had made attempts to find an alternative means of payment and taking into consideration the fact that his pizzeria had been forced to close by the time the matter was brought to her attention, she acquitted him.

While the case was settled back in 2011, it only came to light a few days ago after a local journalist found the court files.
