Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says Opposition leader Bill Shorten's policy on asylum seekers is worse than former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's.

The federal government has long claimed that it stopped illegal boat arrivals in Australia, and that such activity stopped drownings of asylum seekers that were taking place at sea on the way to Australia when the Labor party, led by Mr Rudd, was in power.

Mr Dutton has told Sky News Mr Shorten's policies on asylum seekers would encourage people smugglers to start sending boats full of people seeking asylum to Australia again.
