The Federal Government has announced it will formally refuse to sign up to a key international agreement guaranteeing safe migration between countries. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the United Nations pact would compromise Australian interests. But he has been accused of ignoring a global dilemma.

The United Nations' Global Compact for Migration seeks to enshrine a global set of principles for safe, orderly and regular migration.

But it is a pact countries like the United States, Israel, Austria and Hungary have refused to join.

And, now, Australia is set to join those nations in refusing to sign up.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says it is a hollow document, telling 2GB Radio it could be used against Australia.
