Australian Foreign and Women's Affairs Minister Senator Maurice Payne recently visited Bangladesh on a three-day tour. This is the visit of an Australian Foreign Minister to Bangladesh in the last 21 years. During her stay in Bangladesh, she visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. She also met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr. Momen.


The Australian Foreign Minister assured that Australia would play a role in the Rohingya repatriation. She visited a number of child education and relief distribution programs funded by the Australian Government.
During her visit to the Rohingya camps, she praised Bangladesh for providing shelter to the Rohingyas.

Maris Paine attended a Ministerial-level ocean research seminar held in Dhaka.
During her meeting with Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr Momen, she received requests to transfer of Australian visa office in Dhaka from New Delhi, as well as the lifting of air cargo security restrictions at airports in Bangladesh. In reply, Maurice Payne said Australia would consider the requests.

Australian Foreign and Women's Affairs Minister Maurice Payne also met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's steps for empowering women in Bangladesh.
