Influenza experts are warning those who haven’t had the flu shot risk passing on a deadly strain of the virus, putting at risk elderly people and those with compromised immune systems. Three residents of a nursing home on the New South Wales south coast has died in a prolonged outbreak at the facility, prompting a warning from health authorities.

The Marco Polo Aged Care facility in Unanderra on the New South Wales south coast is locked down in a fight to contain a common virus that has turned deadly.

Warwick Beencke is visiting his wife there.

She isn't sick, but he is taking no chances.

Marco Polo Aged Care is one of many nursing homes around Australia to lose 10 percent of its allocated funding since March in changes to federal aged care funding.

The Health Services Union says half of Australia's aged care facilities are losing money, and the sector is compromising health and safety standards with chronic underfunding.

Marco Polo's manager, Robert O'Shea, says running a nursing home isn't easy, but the flu epidemic is not affecting staff-to-patient ratios.

But staff are themselves being affected by the outbreak: 22 workers at the center have been sent home with symptoms of illness this week, and they are grieving too.
