Mr Tony Burke MP has been elected to the division of Watson since 2004. SBS Bangla spoke with him about the 18 May Federal election.

The division of Watson has a large number of Bangla-speaking voters. Mr Tony Burke MP told SBS Bangla,

"After English, Bangla is the most spoken language in Lakemba."

"So, the relationship with the Bangla community is very close."

He drew attention to a good health system and education:

"The Bangla community like any other group needs to have a good health system access to Medicare and our cancer packages."

"The investment in education is something that Bangla community has always appreciated very deeply as well as small business policies."

Nowadays, it is not easy to become an Australian citizen. However, Mr Burke said,

"We will not make it harder for people who want to make a pledge to Australia to become Australian citizens."
