Climate change is accelerating at an alarming rate, according to a report by the World Meteorological Organisation, which warns global temperature rises could to cross a critical threshold in the next five years.

The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement sets out to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times by the end of the century, but scientists say there is a chance we could temporarily hit that mark by 2023.

Climate change is no longer a distant phenomenon - it is here right now.

That's the message from scientists in response to the latest report on global temperatures, which paints a grim picture for the future.

The past four years were the hottest since records began, and that trend looks set to continue.

Professor Adam Scaife is from the British Meteorological Office, the United Kingdom's national weather service, which contributed data.

He warns the earth could be in the midst of its warmest decade ever.
