COVID-19 update: 52 deaths in Australia; South Australia to open 40 vaccination hubs in schools

On Tuesday, Australia reported at least 52 COVID-19 deaths, including 20 in Victoria and 16 in New South Wales and 12 in Queensland.

Hospitalisation numbers have been rising in the Australian Capital Territory since 4 April. The ACT reported 80 people in hospitals on Tuesday.

Close contacts in Western Australia can collect their free rapid antigen test kits from drive-through sites in Joondalup, Jandakot and Bassendean from 18 May. 

South Australia to open 40 vaccination hubs in schools beginning 27 May to boost the low inoculation rate among children aged 5-11. The vaccination program will operate in 10 schools per week only on Fridays and Saturdays.

SA's Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said nine children in the state have developed paediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome (PIMS-TS) since the start of the pandemic.

Professor Spurrier said PIMS-TS, a rare but potentially life-threatening side-effect of COVID-19, can be prevented through vaccination.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation is reviewing the evidence on whether booster doses are required in children aged 12-15, including those with underlying medical conditions.
