COVID-19 update: Australia reports 42 deaths, passengers test positive on WA cruise ship

Australia reported at least 42 COVID-19 deaths, including 18 in New South Wales and 15 in Victoria, on Tuesday. Western Australia's figures included seven historical deaths.

Ten passengers and two crew tested positive for COVID-19 on a cruise ship in Western Australia. The cruise ship, Coral Discoverer, arrived in Broome early on Monday after a 10-day voyage from Darwin. All passengers are triple vaccinated. 

Western Australia had permitted small cruise ships carrying no more than 350 passengers and crew to enter the state from 17 April.

Western Australia could scrap indoor masks rules this week as the number of new COVID-19 cases has remained steady in the state.

University of Melbourne epidemiologist Nancy Baxter believes it's too early to ease restrictions as New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland announced scraping close contact isolation and quarantine rules last week. 

"Right now, we are in the denial phase of the pandemic where we want to live like we did before," Professor Baxter told  on Tuesday.
Beijing is mass-testing people following new COVID-19 cases. On Monday, a health official reported 70 infections in eight of 16 districts in the Chinese capital. Most (46) cases were in  district.

China is learnt to have adopted strict measures under its 'zero-COVID' approach. Its financial hub Shanghai has been in lockdown for the past four weeks.
