COVID-19 Update: Deputy PM tests positive for COVID-19 in the US

  • Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has tested positive to COVID-19 in the US. He will isolate there until it is safe for him to return home.
  • Queensland has reached 80 per cent vaccination target for those aged 16 and over.
  • Health experts say the Omicron variant is likely to become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in Australia, after both Queensland and Victoria have recorded their first cases.
  • 44 cases have been linked to the pub trivia night in Sydney. However, it remains unclear whether any of them are the new Omicron variant infections.
  • Eight new cases of Omicron infections recorded in NSW, the total number is now 42.
  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Novac Djokovic will have to follow rules on vaccination ‘just like everyone else’, to be allowed into Australia for the Australian Open
COVID-19 STATS: 

Victoria recorded 1,232 locally acquired cases and nine deaths.
NSW recorded 420 new community cases and one death. 
The ACT recorded four cases.
