COVID-19 update: In NSW, lockdown ends for Orange and Glen Innes, Victoria shatters daily case record

  • In northern NSW, Grafton residents urged to get tested
  • Victoria now has 6,666 active cases
  • ACT enters its seventh week of lockdown
  • Queensland records one new case in home quarantine

New South Wales
NSW has recorded 1,063 new locally acquired cases and six deaths.

Orange and Glen Innes local government areas will exit lockdown today, while Narromine will come out on Saturday, 25 September.

Fragments of the virus have been found in sewage samples from Grafton in northern NSW, where there are no known cases.

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 766 new locally acquired cases, the highest daily figure reported since the pandemic. Four people have died.

More than 100,000 teachers in the state, along with childcare workers, will be required to have at least one dose before 18 October and need to be fully vaccinated by 29 November, unless they have a medical exemption.

Fully vaccinated Victorians from Sydney will be able to return home from 30 September. They need to have a negative COVID-19 test not older than 72 hours and spend 14 days in quarantine, which can be done at home.

Australian Capital Territory

The territory has recorded 16 new locally acquired cases, bringing the total of active cases to 674.  

Residents aged between 12 and 59 can receive a Moderna vaccine through their local pharmacy from today.

  • Federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan says the government was getting its systems ready, including vaccine passports, to allow international travel "by Christmas at the latest" without mandatory hotel quarantine.
