COVID-19 Update: New Zealand set to reopen borders sooner

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for March 14.

  • New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that borders will be reopened to tourists earlier than previously advised.
  • "Australians generally were due to come in July, visa waiver countries as well thereafter. We're looking to bring those forward because we believe we can safely do so," Ms Ardern said, adding that details will be revealed later this week.
  • The National Cabinet has expressed last Friday the intention to eliminate self-isolation requirements for COVID-19 close contacts.
  • State and territory leaders have asked the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee on the matter, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying "we would like to say goodbye to that rule as quickly as we can".
  • The National Cabinet is not expected to reconvene until June, after the Federal elections.
  • China is experiencing a spike in cases of the Omicron variant, with the worst outbreak in the country since the start of the pandemic. China separates in its count symptomatic and asymptomatic cases, with figures totalling 1,938 and 1,455 respectively on Sunday.
  • The country is still pursuing a zero-COVID strategy and the cities of Changchun, with 9 million inhabitants, and Shenzhen, with over 17 million, are now in lockdown. 

COVID-19 Australian Stats

New South Wales reported 1,005 patients hospitalised with 47 in intensive care. There was one death and 8,911 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 198 people are in hospital with 25 in ICU and 7 on ventilators. There was one death and 5,499 new infections.

Tasmania has recorded 923 new COVID-19 cases. There are 13 people with COVID-19 in hospital, with 3 requiring intensive care.

In the ACT 38 people are now in hospital with COVID-19, 3 of them requiring intensive care, with 599 new infections reported.

In Queensland, there were 3,797 new COVID-19 cases and 2 deaths. 233 people are hospitalised with COVID-19, with 19 patients in ICU.

In South Australia 113 people are currently in hospital with COVID-19 and 10 of them are in ICU, one is ventilated. There were 2,099 new cases.

In Western Australia there were 4,037 new cases of COVID-19 with 109 people currently in hospital and one patient requiring intensive care.

In the Northern Territory there were 198 new cases of COVID-19. 26 people are now in hospital with 2 patients in ICU.
