COVID-19 Update: Northern Territory lockdown extended to seven days

  • The three-day lockdown in the Katherine area of NT has been extended to seven days after nine new cases. All cases in NT are Aboriginal Territorians. Chief Minister Michael Gunner has urged all communities to get vaccines.
  • Queensland has reopened borders for travellers from NSW with home quarantine.
  • A five-week inquiry into coronavirus deaths at St Basil's Homes for the Aged begins as Victoria investigates one of the deadliest aged care facility outbreaks.
  • National literacy hotline, The Reading Writing Hotline has recorded a 46 per cent spike in calls since October over confusing health messaging related to COVID vaccination.
  • The Victorian parliament debates its proposed pandemic laws amid more protests.

COVID-19 STATS:

Victoria recorded 797 locally acquired cases and eight deaths. 
NSW recorded 212 new community cases and two deaths. 
ACT has recorded 12 new local cases, NT nine.
New Zealand registered its highest tally of 222 cases since pandemic began and one death.
