New South Wales has recorded a sixth person with the Omicron strain, a Sydney man in his 40s who arrived on the same flight last Thursday as a number of cases.

Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly says it will take up to two weeks before there's enough information about the threat of the Omicron variant.

All international travellers entering New South Wales and Victoria need to isolate for 72 hours and take a COVID-19 test. A second test must be taken on day six after arriving in NSW, and between days five and seven in Victoria even after leaving quarantine.

All travellers entering New South Wales from eight southern African nations, or nine in the case of Victoria, will need to quarantine for 14 days.

NSW has increased its fines to $5000 for those who fail to comply with quarantine or testing requirements, up from $1000. The fine for corporations breaching requirements has been doubled to $10,000.
