COVID-19 update: NSW reports 22 per cent jump in BA.4/BA.5 cases, SA offers multi-virus test

On Friday, Australia reported at least 50 COVID-19 deaths, including 18 in Victoria, 11 in Queensland and eight in New South Wales. Also, Western Australia reported one historical death.

The number of hospitalisations has increased in NSW and Queensland in the past two weeks. However, it has come down in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

South Australians can get tested for 12 different viruses alongside their COVID-19 test. Residents, however, are required a GP referral before they approach COVID-19 drive-through clinics and private pathologies for their multi-virus test.  

NSW Health has reported a 22 per cent rise in infections from BA.4 and BA.5 sub-lineages of the Omicron variant. The health authority believes BA.4 and BA.5 will become the dominant strain and drive up infections in the coming weeks.

BA.4 and BA.5 are believed to be behind a rise in number of hospitalisations in South Africa.

The World Health Organization said global fatalities from COVID-19 increased by four per cent last week after declining for over five weeks. 

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is asking for the removal of face masks requirements on flights. Mr Joyce told  that Australia was behind the curve on face mask rules. 

Most Australian states and territories will lift the face mask requirements at airport terminals this weekend. However, face masks are still mandatory on flights.
