COVID-19 Update: Outbreak delays Australian aid to Tonga as NSW restrictions are extended

  • A COVID-19 outbreak has hit the Australian Navy vessel carrying humanitarian aid and medical supplies to Tonga, with 23 cases recorded on board.
  • The government is working with Tongan authorities to keep the ship at sea, and to ensure there is no threat to the Pacific nation which is currently virus-free.
  • NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced the state will extend its COVID-19 restrictions for another month as hospitalisations increased.
  • The restrictions include density limits of one person per two square metres and wearing face masks indoors except at home.
  • Nationally, 76 new deaths have been recorded.
  • Supermarket supply shortages are easing as staff return to work according to Coles and Woolworths. Product limits on RATs, paracetamol and toilet paper remain in both supermarket chains.
  • Labor has committed to a funding package to improve ventilation in schools if it wins government at the next election.
COVID-19 Stats:

NSW reported 2,943 people have been hospitalised with 183 in intensive care, 29 new deaths, and 18,512 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 1,057 people were hospitalised, with 119 in ICU. There were 29 deaths and 14,836 new infections.

In Queensland there are 928 people in hospital including 51 in intensive care, 11 deaths and 9,546 new cases. Tasmania has recorded 35 people in hospitalised, 643 new cases and one death.
