COVID-19 update: Victoria's hospitalisations rise as NSW reports highest daily deaths in a month

On Tuesday, New South Wales (NSW) reported 23 COVID-19 deaths - its highest daily deaths number since 4 April. 

Victoria reported 12 deaths and 482 people in hospitals. Data shows the number of hospitalisations is rising in the state.

The Australian Capital Territory could drop its vaccine mandate for workers in healthcare and education settings next week.

South Australia has detected its first cases of BA.4 and BA.5 infections in international travellers. BA.4 and BA.5 are sublineages of Omicron and have already been found in NSW and Victoria.  

Australia's Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sonya Bennett, said coronavirus and flu infections are expected to increase in winter. 

"Getting your flu vaccination ahead of the peak flu season will provide the highest level of protection," Dr Bennett said.

"This usually occurs from June to September in most parts of Australia. It takes up to two weeks for the vaccine to be completely effective, so organising your vaccination before June is best," Dr Bennett added.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has been cleared to return to the White House after she tested negative for COVID-19. She was found COVID-19 positive a week ago.
