COVID-19 Update: WA fights Omicron with more free RATs and a new ICU unit

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for March 15.

  • From today, WA households can receive .
  • 10 extra tests will be automatically delivered to those who registered when the state government initially offered 5 RATs per household.
  • Western Australia Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson opened yesterday a new 24-bed Intensive Care Unit at Royal Perth Hospital, which will take patients from tomorrow.
  • Minister Sanderson said that "the opening of this facility is timely given the recent rise in WA's COVID caseload and brings the State's ICU capacity to 145 beds".
  • Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath has announced yesterday on social media she had tested positive for COVID-19.
  • The news came as Queensland human rights commissioner Scott McDougall challenged in Parliament Minister D'Ath's request to extend the chief health officer emergency powers until October.
  • South Australia's COVID-Ready Committee is meeting this morning to discuss the further easing of restrictions in the state, including mask wearing and isolation requirements for close contacts.

COVID-19 Australian Stats

New South Wales reported 1,032 patients hospitalised with 38 in intensive care. There were 6 deaths and 10,689 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 197 people are in hospital with 24 in ICU and 6 on ventilators. There were 4 deaths and 7,460 new infections.

Tasmania has recorded 1,376 new COVID-19 cases. There are 14 people with COVID-19 in hospital, with 3 requiring intensive care.

In the ACT 40 people are now in hospital with COVID-19, 4 of them requiring intensive care. One death and 786 new infections have been reported.

In Queensland, there were 5,589 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths. 246 people are hospitalised with COVID-19, with 19 patients in ICU.

In Western Australia there were 5,377 new cases of COVID-19 with 112 people currently in hospital and 5 patients requiring intensive care.

 In South Australia 129 people are currently in hospital with COVID-19 and 10 of them are in ICU, one is ventilated. There were 2,380 new cases and 3 deaths.

In the Northern Territory there were 295 new cases of COVID-19. 31 people are now in hospital with 2 patients in ICU.
