Ube halaya, ube halo-halo, or ube cake – Ube is always present in fiestas, special occasions, and even ordinary days for Filipinos.
Ube, commonly known as purple yam, holds a significant place in Filipino culture as an heirloom product indigenous to the Philippines. Its popularity has transcended borders in recent years, asserting its presence even in Melbourne, the culinary capital of Australia.
The Filipino community will hold 'Colour our World Purple: An Ube Festival in Melbourne' on 11 February 2024, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Queen Victoria Market.
This festival aims to celebrate the cultural significance of ube, positioning it as a gateway to promoting other Filipino products. The event seeks to raise awareness of Filipino cuisine and culture while showcasing the talent of Filipino chefs and businesses in Victoria.
At the heart of the Ube Festival is a unique, one-night-only Chefs Long Table curated by the Uling Charcoal Project, a proud member of the newly established Filipino Chefs Association of Victoria.
