Key Points
  • Forums such as The Manila Dialogue creates opportunities for experts to exchange ideas and opinions in relation to the current climate and situation in the South China Sea.
  • It may lead to opportunities for possible solutions or policies in relation to the disputed territories.
  • The incoming Trump Admintration's stand on the South China Sea remains unclear, there is no guarantee if it will its approach or stand on the disputed territories.
It's a very different approach from the ones we saw in the previous Duterte Administration, which sort of kept some of these issues quiet while they did deals on economic issues like the Belt and Road with Beijing. We're seeing a shift and the Philippines is really at the forefront among the South East Asian countries in trying to push back against the use of grey zone tactics. I think under the administration of Marcos Jr. the balance between the security and economic imperative has shifted.
