- 'Parting at Calamba,' written by National Artist Severino Montano, revolves around themes of love, Dr. Jose Rizal's poignant farewell to his family, and his unwavering patriotism that transcended self-interest. Direk Chi De Jesus dedicated an entire year to ensure the production's success, including conducting auditions to select the cast.
Director Chi De Jesus spoke with deep emotion during his interview with SBS Filipino.
He expressed that the story of Dr. Jose Rizal's 'Parting at Calamba' resonates universally.
"I find it deeply moving because it speaks to everyone. We all belong to a family—whether it's the bond between a son and his mother, a daughter, or the connections among siblings.
It’s a brilliant portrayal of something the Philippines must recognize: that despite the varying aspirations and intentions of those around you, it all ultimately centers on one fundamental reason—your well-being," he shared.

He added that this play holds great significance because Dr. Jose Rizal's experiences reflect the lives and struggles of many Filipinos even today.
"The story of Dr. Jose Rizal needs to be revisited regularly because there is so much we can learn and understand about ourselves as Filipinos, especially for those who have experienced migration," he explained.

"Being outside the Philippines is not an excuse to forget that you are still Filipino. This is why we in Australia continue to participate in Filipino events to promote our culture, especially our values.
In this story, there is a strong focus on family—on how important it is to be with the people who matter most, especially during the final days of our lives,"* she said.
Meanwhile, Jinky Trijo-Mash, who portrays Saturnina, Dr. Jose Rizal's eldest sister, reflected on the depth of sibling love in the story.
"She is a very protective and family-oriented woman. She values family, unity, and living a peaceful life," Jinky shared.
She emphasised the importance of watching the play as it fosters a deeper understanding of Filipino identity.
"It helps spread the positive values, like those Rizal embodied, which were greatly influenced by his family."
Director Chi De Jesus left an important reminder for all Filipinos, not just those in Australia:
"Everyone has the right to happiness, to a good night's sleep, and to peace. But these will not come if you don't take action because these are the things worth your life, your time, and your very existence."
