For the first time, China has spent more to import Australians wines than French wines. Over the first ten months of 2017, the country has spent a bit more than AUS$90 million dollars on 8.42 million litres of Australian wine and a bit more than AUS$83 million dollars on 12.89 litres of French wine.
France is still selling more in term of volume, but Australia is gaining more.
This change is partly due to the free trade agreement signed by Australia and China in 2015. And the drop in the customs tariff duties at the beginning of 2018 should only strengthen that trend.
The reputation of Australian wine is changing
But that's not all. The reputation of Australian wine, which used to be considered low-quality, has been changing in the last few years.
Australia's wine exportations have been growing for the last three years, and Australia is now the fifth wine exporter in the world.
