The hamburger is about to dethrone the jambon-beurre sandwich

If the jambon-beurre sandwich is still the French's favourite lunch (1.23 billion eaten last year), it's losing ground, with a 3% decrease in the past year.

The hamburger could soon become the number one choice for the French in 2016. Last year, they ate 1.19 billion burgers, a 11% rise compared to the year before. Only a third of those burgers were bought in fast-food chains, the majority coming from brasseries and traditional restaurants.

Bernard Boutboul, Director general of Gira Conseil, where the study comes from, explains that the popularity of burgers exploded in France after the burger from chic Parisian hotel Le Meurice was named best in the world in 2010. "Sandwich loaves arrived on the shelf, then bagels. The jambon-beurre is well-loved, but consumers wants diversity," he adds.

But the French are not the biggest burger eaters. According to NPD Group, they eat in average 14 burgers each year, while the English eat 20, the Americans 30 and the Australians 38.

What about you... Are you team burger or team jambon-beurre?
