Η απόφαση ελήφθη από τον Δήμο της περιοχής Parramatta (Parramatta City Council). Το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο δεσμεύθηκε να δημιουργήσει “κήπο μνήμης” και na τοποθετήσει αναμνηστική πλάκα προς τιμήν των θυμάτων.
Αυτή θα αποτελεί έναν ουσιαστικό και διαχρονικό φόρο τιμής, καθώς και ένα ισχυρό βήμα προς τη δικαιοσύνη και τη διατήρηση της μνήμης, αναφέρεται στην ανακοίνωση της Ομοσπονδίας.
Το σχετικό ψήφισμα προτάθηκε από την δημοτική σύμβουλο Tanya Raffoul —απόγονος η ίδια επιζώντων της Αρμενικής Γενοκτονίας — και υποστηρίχθηκε από τον δημοτικό σύμβουλο Anthony Ellard.
Στον συγκεκριμένο Δήμο υπολογίζεται ότι ζουν περίπου 6.000 Αυστραλοί αρμενικής, ασσυριακής και ελληνικής καταγωγής.
Για το θέμα, η Ομοσπονδία απέστειλε την ακόλουθη ανακοίνωση στα Αγγλικά. Υπογράφεται από την πρόεδρο Γεσθημανή Πασχαλίδη-Χειλά και τον Γραμματέα Παναγιώτης Στεφανίδη.
Parramatta City Council Recognises the Armenian Genocide and Honours Victims with Memorial Garden
The Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia proudly acknowledges and commends the Parramatta City Council for its historic decision to formally recognise the Armenian Genocide and to establish a memorial garden and plaque in honour of the victims.
This important motion was tabled by Councillor Tanya Raffoul, a proud Armenian-Australian and descendant of a genocide survivor, and seconded by Councillor Anthony Ellard. The resolution, unanimously passed by the Council is a significant act of remembrance and solidarity, acknowledging the suffering of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek peoples during the early 20th century.
We are especially grateful to the City of Parramatta for recognising the shared history of over 6,000 Australians of Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek heritage residing in the local government area. The creation of a memorial garden will serve as a lasting tribute to the memory of the victims and a place for reflection, education, and community healing.
Representing the Federation at this milestone event were members of our Executive Committee, including President Esta Paschalidis-Chilas, Maria Anthony President of Pontoxeniteas NSW, along with leaders from our NSW member associations.
“To witness Councillor Raffoul move this motion was personally moving and affirming. Motions such as this, pave the way to healing. Genocide recognition is not about creating division across our rich multicultural community, rather through truth telling inter-community bridges can be built on more solid foundations”, said Esta Paschalidis-Chilas, President.

We commend Parramatta City Council for its leadership and moral clarity, and we look forward to supporting the establishment of the memorial garden as a symbol of unity, remembrance, and respect.
Να σημειωθεί, ότι η Τουρκία αρνείται κατηγορηματικά τις γενοκτονίες αυτές και καταδικάζει τις όποιες κινήσεις για αναγνώρισή τους. Οι τουρκικές αρχές αποδίδουν τους περισσότερους θανάτους εκείνη την περίοδο σε πείνα και ασθένειες. Υποστηρίζουν δε πως αυτά που συνέβησαν τότε δεν συνιστούν γενοκτονία, σύμφωνα με το διεθνές δίκαιο.
