Authorities proceeded with the arrest at the Far North Queensland city on Thursday, 8 July as part of a joint law enforcement investigation.
The arrest was led by the specialised unit Cairns Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET), including detectives from the Child Protection and Investigation Unit and Australian Federal Police.
The man, 34, has been charged with two counts of possessing child exploitation material and one count each of use a carriage service to transmit child abuse material, transmitted to himself child abuse material by using a carriage service, and possession of drug utensils.
He is reportedly a Greek national who has been living for a while in Cairns on a working visa.
Newscorp outlets report that he is understood to be a hospitality worker.
The man was granted bail to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 23.
