They spoke to SBS Greek about their musical beginnings, their love for rap, and the challenges they face as young artists.
“We are the only Greek [rap] group in Australia, in such a large Greek community abroad. We don’t play clarinet or rebetiko. We don’t follow the usual path. We stepped off the beaten track and are trying to give the other side of things.”
With humour and authenticity, “H Division” shares funny stories from their journey so far, responds to those who criticize rap music, and reveals their future plans.
“In Greece, you have the luxury… that you can go out on a Saturday, or a Sunday, go to a club, to a venue, see a live performance by an artist you like and listen to the music you like. Here, there is none of that. There are bouzoukia, there are taverns with live music, but there’s nowhere to go to listen to [Greek] rap or something different from the usual, something that doesn’t exist… But we go to those places too. We go to taverns, we go to bouzoukia. We have no taboos. We like everything.”
“We need people to gradually understand that we are also part of the Greek community, doing something that helps the Greek community.”
