A Greek goddesses inspires Melbourne's Hellenic Museum new work

Now on display at Melbourne's "Hellenic Museum", "The Messenger", a spectacular new work by internationally lauded and Melbourne-born artist Sam Jinks. SBS greek was at the launch of the exhibition and interviews Athens's "Benaki Museum" CEO, Haris Siampanis and museum's sponsor, lawyer Peter Mitrakas.

The Messenger is inspired by a statue of the Greek goddess Iris from the west pediment of the Parthenon (now in the British Museum).

Sam Jinks' commission was made possible by the support of the Victorian Government and philanthropists Peter and Mary Mitrakas. It was produced as part of a cross-cultural partnership between the Hellenic Museum and the Benaki Museum, Athens.

The Messenger is the second major art commission by the Hellenic Museum and follows the unique "ONEIROI" installation by artist Bill Henson which also inspired dialogue between the aesthetics of the ancient past and today.
