The ‘Famagusta Dialogues’ was recently released. The report covers the talks between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots in Famagusta, about Varosia.
The talks were organised by the bi-communal citizens’ organisation “Cyprus Academic Dialogue” (CAD), with the aim of starting a communication channel between the two sides, regarding ‘the future prospects of Famagusta’ as written in a press release by CAD.
The initiative was funded by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the institution Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) in Cyprus.
The general conclusion of the report it that there are differences between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots as well as internal differences within these two communities’’ said to SBS Greek Dr Michalis S. Michael, the author of the report.
Turkish-Cypriots were more concerned with practical issues such as tourism and unemployment, while Greek-Cypriots were embracing the idea of the return in the city.
'However I have to say that the Greek Cypriots were realists enough in recognising to say that there needs to be a new Famagusta, build jointly by Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots' said Mr Michael.
