Niki Matziaris-Garay has been on the forefront of social services for decades. She worked tirelessly for the Greek community of Melbourne through various posts with her contribution spanning almost four decades.


Recently, Ms Matziaris received one of the highest honours, the Order of Australia Medal, for her long and varied contribution to the Greek community.

The Medal of the Order of Australia is awarded to individuals who have left their mark in their chosen field of work, their philanthropic work, their services to society or to Australia.

Ms Matziaris, originally from Edessa, emigrated to Australia in the 1970s and was active for decades in the social services field.

She worked for a number of years in Pronia (then known as Australian - Greek Welfare Society) in various positions where she developed important initiatives and programs for Greek migrants especially women and families, and later for the elderly.

Upon her retiremnt she founded Iliades , a women's association.
