The Indian cricket team supporter group 'Fans India' has released a special song dedicated to India's women’s team for the Women’s T20 World Cup taking place in Australia.

Many songs have been written for the Indian men's team over time but this is the first time that a song is being dedicated to the women cricketers.

The song 'Mera India' (meaning My India) was directed, filmed and composed in Adelaide by Team India fans.

Quizzed about the new anthem, Rajul Sharma, a member of the Fans India group told SBS Gujarati he wanted to celebrate the players and game.

“We always love to celebrate the game of cricket and this time we brought Bollywood and sports together by releasing the song.

"Our last World Cup song was played by the ICC at all India matches at the 2019 men’s Cricket World Cup and this time we have released the song to support and promote women’s cricket,” said Rajul, who is also the singer and lyricist of Mera India.

The special anthem was produced in Adelaide by Fans India members who filmed and completed it in two-and-a-half days.

“We have shot this song at the gymnasium, cricket ground and at the beach showcasing various types of traditional dances of India," said Rajul.

“Generally, women's tournaments are not getting enough support or promotion and fans are not engaging themselves to it, but the message of this song tells fans we should support women’s sports and encourage them to do well at the global stage," said Vatsal Desai, another member of the Fans India.

Support for Women’s T20 World Cup

The Fans India will hand the song to ICC World Cup administrators to play at the ground during match days, cheering on Team India and entertaining the fans.

“Members of the group will attend all women's World Cup games and encourage Indian fans to come out in big numbers to support the team," said Rajul.

“We will also play dhol, music, songs and provide free entertainment to the spectators during the game."
