Australia's permanent migrant intake has dropped by more than 10 percent due to tougher vetting procedures imposed by the federal government.
Despite the cap remaining at 190,000 in the last financial year, the actual intake fell to 163,000.
Tthe largest fall was in the family stream, in particular, spousal visas.
Despite a cut in the permanent migrant intake, Australia is left with positive net migration numbers.
By the end of the last financial year Australia had 225,700 more people than the previous year.
