Indian columnist, humorist, writer and playwright, Tarak Mehta, known for the popular column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chashma' in Gujarati language, passed away at the age of 87 on Wednesday morning.
He died after prolonged illness, ANI reported.
Gujarati magazine reported that Mehta's family has decided to donate his mortal remains to a local medical college.
One of India’s popular television show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ was based on his column.
The playwright has published 80 books out of which three are reportedly based on his columns for the Gujarati newspaper Divya Bhaskar.
He was awarded Padmashri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 2015.
Tributes poured in on Twitter as fans learned of his death.
