Coming out of the closet and expressing your sexuality is still considered a huge taboo in the Indian community.

But Salaphaty Rao, an Indian-origin Melbourne resident’s love story with John Mc Cane, is bound to melt your heart.

Surprisingly, the common thread between them turned out to be Hinduism. Mc Cane and Rao first met through a Facebook group for LGBT Hindus. And after numerous Skype sessions, the couple decided to take a trip to India together.

"It was probably toward the end of our first India tour together. I had become very ill in Delhi (the first time after a decade worth of trips to India) and as he cared for me I realised just how strong a connection we had made. It made me realise at that moment that I was willing to try a relationship with someone who was so far away if that meant one day we could be together for the rest of our lives,” Rao told Indiatimes.

Early this year, the couple got engaged in a traditional South Indian ceremony at Rao’s home in Melbourne.
