Puneet Puneet files petition against extradition case in higher court, claims report

Hit and run convict Puneet Puneet’s lawyer Kanhaiya Kumar Singal told the on Monday that they had filed a petition in the High Court against the ongoing trial.

“I expect that High Court will decide in our favour,” he added.

The court has reserved the judgment until Tuesday.

The extradition case came up for hearing in Delhi court on Monday.

Puneet Puneet was limping when he appeared at New Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday.

The Judge hearing his extradition case was replaced recently and the Monday hearing ended with the replaced Justice Gurmohini Kaur deciding to examine the claim Puneet is suffering from schizophrenia, kidney and liver problems and multiple other ailments at the next hearing on November 24, reports.

Justice Kaur said she needed time to read the 2000 page file.

Puneet's laywer, Mr Singhal said he will be providing medical records and will get doctors to demonstrate in court that Puneet was gravely ill.
In his attempt to fight extradition, Puneet Puneet who fled to India after killing a teenager while drunk driving in Melbourne has earlier claimed in the court that Australia is racist.

Puneet Puneet fled Australia on a friend's passport in 2009 while he was on bail charged over the death of nursing student Dean Hofstee. He was arrested four years later in India.

To back his claim, Puneet presented to have been racially abused and mistreated while working in Australia.  

“Australians are biased towards Indians so I request Indian authorities to take care of its nationals,” Chef .

“Puneet should be free,” he told the court. “India should help Puneet, not Australia.”

Puneet was a 19-year-old learner driver when he hit and killed Mr Hofstee, 19, and seriously injured Clancy Coker, 20, in Southbank in Melbourne on October 1, 2008.

Police estimated Puneet was driving at 148km/h — more than double the legal limit in the area. He also tested positive for alcohol.
