Protests, arrests in Indonesia following election 'cheating' allegations

Police fired tear gas into the crowd after a former military special forces commander was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle weapons into a protest against President Joko Widodo's re-election.

Indonesian police have fired tear gas into a crowd of protesters in central Jakarta during a rally following President Joko Widodo's re-election.

Indonesia's Elections Commission announced on Tuesday that Mr Widodo had won 55.5 per cent to opponent Prabowo Subianto's 44.5 per cent, declaring the result a day earlier than intended in response to

growing fears of protests and riots

About 1,000 protesters gathered in Jakarta on Wednesday, where local television footage showed some of the protesters hurling fireworks and other objects at the riot police.
