Nduga Regency, which is located in the mountains and is a remote area, has become a conflict area with a number of victims, at least in the last five years.
However, the events on July 16, 2022, became one of the most terrible tragedies in recent years, due to the large death toll, reaching at least 10 people. They are civilians who are doing their daily activities in the Kenyam area, Nduga.
Human rights defender Yones Dou spoke about the tragedy from a Papuan perspective. About how Nduga had been proclaimed as a war zone by the TPN-OPM, and because of that they asked everyone to leave the area.
Yones Dou also highlighted how difficult it is to act in this kind of tragedy, because of the confusion about who the ten victims actually were, according to the TPM-OPM, they were TNI-Polri spies. Meanwhile, according to the Indonesian government, the victims were purely civilians.
