Currently Indonesia has ten UNESCO Global Geoparks. Expected to bring "quality tourism" instead of "mass tourism", what exactly does geopark entail?

Professor Mega Fatimah Rosana has served as the Chair of the Geopark Expert Board of the Indonesian National Geopark Committee since 2022.

In July, the Dean of the Faculty of Geological Engineering, Padjadjaran University, was one of the speakers at the Geopark Festival 2024 workshop in Sydney. The Geofest is an event initiated by the UNESCO Rinjani Geopark from Indonesia.

Prof Mega said that she was invited to share knowledge regarding geoparks in Indonesia, of which currently there are 10 that hold UNESCO Global Geopark status.

The concept of geopark is not mass tourism. What we want is quality tourism.

To SBS Indonesian, Prof Mega explained that geoparks in Indonesia have a comprehensive concept by integrating geological, natural and cultural heritage of international value in one holistic management.

Because this geopark area is usually very fragile, the geologist said that what is hoped for is "quality tourism", instead of mass tourism, where it is hoped that tourists for educational purposes stay for a long period of time, which in turn can also improve the economy of indigenous people living locally.

What are the challenges in obtaining and maintaining UNESCO Global Geopark status?
