The Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, General Andika Perkasa, promises a new approach to resolving the problems in Papua.
General Andika himself made a visit to the area on the 21-23 December, especially to Manokwari and Sorong. All parties hope that this commitment is not just words without reality, because Papua has suffered for too long.
One of the main problems in Papua is security. So far, the government through the TNI has responded to this issue with a security approach in the form of military operations. New military posts also continue to be established throughout region, despite the local residents' resistance.
Yohanis Mambrasar, a human rights advocate and PAHAM Papua presented his views on General Andika Perkasa's new approach, including hopes for an organic troop withdrawal, and a review of plans to establish new military posts in Papua.
