Tough choice: Renting a house but not being able to buy food

Many families receiving payments from Centrelink can barely survive, and many of them are choosing between paying house rent or buying food or medicine.


About 800,000 people living below the poverty line are children. A

new annual report from Anglicare Australia provides a stark picture of the cost-of-living crisis afflicting some of the country's most vulnerable communities. The

annual Cost of Living Report found that after paying rent, transport and food, everyone who receives the Parenting Payment has only 3 dollars a day left.

Families of four with two parents on Jobseeker's Allowance are underfunded by about $17 a week.

And someone under 35 living alone at the same rate would have to shell out an extra $135 each week.
