A report into food insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic shows demand has risen and the peak hunger period hasn't yet occurred.

The relief organisation Foodbank says three in ten Australians facing food insecurity had not gone hungry before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Young Australians are being hardest hit during the coronavirus pandemic.

65 per cent of young people aged between 18 to 25 who are going hungry, are missing out on food at least once a week because of the pandemic.

The number of people seeking food relief at least once a week has doubled since last year. (15 per cent to 31 per cent)

More than a quarter ((28 per cent)) of those experiencing food insecurity had never needed support before the pandemic.

Those struggling say the most common barriers to accessing relief are embarrassment ((33 per cent)), shame ((30 per cent)) and thinking others may be in greater need ((33 per cent)).
