An Italian descendent has been awarded for his "significant service to the biomedical sector, to commercialisation initiatives, and to research" in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2020.

Third-generation immigrant Mario Pennisi (his grandparents arrived in Australia about 100 years ago from Sicily) has dedicated a lifetime to supporting and spreading the importance of science.

In addition to having managed several medical practices, Pennisi also taught at the University of Queensland and has chaired several scientific boards, mainly at Queensland University of Tecnology.

The title of Member of the Order of Australia is not the first recognition he has received. He was honoured with many awards and in 2018 was also named "one of Queensland's 100 most influential people".
