- Prime Minister Scott Morrison has held bilateral talks with his Vanuatu counterpart Charlot Salwai in Port Vila. It is the first time an Australian prime minister has visited Vanuatu since 1990.
- Opposition leader Bill Shorten says he won't change the date of Australia Day if elected as Prime Minister. It comes as a new poll shows three out of four people are happy to continue celebrating Australia Day on January 26, despite concerted efforts to change the date. The Institute of Public Affairs poll shows just 10 per cent of 1000 people surveyed wants to change the date of the national day.
- North Korea's lead negotiator in nuclear talks with the United States, Kim Yong Chol, headed to Washington. It seems like two countries are getting closer to finalizing plans for a second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
- British Prime Minister Theresa May is hoping to survive a vote of no confidence, after suffering a historic defeat in parliament over her Brexit deal. The deal was voted down with 432 votes against and only 202 for. Ms May has three days to come up with an alternative deal.
- Serbian top seed Novak Djokovic is into the Australian Open second round after beating American qualifier Mitchell Krueger in straight sets.
