After the end of the Buddhist Lent until full moon of the twelfth month (usually in November), it is the season for Kathina.
What is KATHINA?
It is in Lao and Buddhist tradition to offer the robe (Kathina) to the monks who have resided at a temple throughout the Lent.
Traditionally, the robed are woven, dyed and (sometimes stitched) before being offered to the monks.
There are some traditions attached to the Kathina. There must be at least 5 (five) monks in order to receive the offering for any temple.
Each Temple can ONLY “accept” one Kathina per year.
There are some other rites and practices attached to the Kathina.
SBS Radio Lao Program had an opportunity to talk to an Acting Abbot of Wat Lao Buddha Metta in St. John’s Park, NSW. We posed many questions about the Kathina in order to help our listeners to understand the essence of Kathina which has been in our tradition and culture for millennia.
