Councillor Tom Joseph was serving as the North Ward Councillor in the Whittlesea Council, and has now been elected as the Deputy Mayor for a period of 12 months.

According to the City of Whittlesea, Joseph was elected unopposed and sworn in at a special council meeting on Thursday, at the conclusion of former Deputy Mayor Emilia Sterjova‘s term.

Joseph was elected to Whittlesea Council in October of 2017, after the Victorian Electoral Commission conducted a count back to fill the vacancy of Councillor John Butler who had passed away in September. Joseph, a Mernda resident, was elected with a majority of votes cast.

“One of my key priorities over the next 12 months is to work with my colleagues to create a digital transformation to make it easier for the residents to interact with their council," said Councillor Joseph of his new tenure as Deputy Mayor. "It is important that our residents are able to use technology to interact with council at their convenience.”

Joseph hails from the Southern Indian state of Kerala, and arrived in Australia as a skilled migrant in 2006. He then settled in the suburb of Mernda where he worked closely with the local community.

The City of Whittlesea also elected Lawrie Cox as its Mayor on Thursday.
