Advocates call for 'special' laws to tackle issues faced by live-in couples in Nepal

Legal experts in Nepal say the country lacks specific laws when it comes to unmarried couples living together. There is a general understanding that the number of couples in live-in relationships is increasing. However, detailed and official data on this matter is not available. Advocate Bimala Khadka from Nepal's National Women Commission says that couples face many issues when a relationship reaches a dead end or when disruptions arise. She told SBS Nepali that with a lack of laws and legal support, some individuals in such situations have reached to points of self-harm and suicide.
