Lisa Waup is a mixed-cultural First Nations artist and curator, born in Narrm

“I use different materials to talk of stories, speak of things of what is happening now; reflecting on family, connection to Culture and Country and how I navigate that space. I see it as a platform to be able to tell those stories” – Lisa Waup

As a finalist in the 2024 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), Lisa Waup brings a unique perspective to contemporary art.

Waup's work is characterized by its symbolic use of materials, each chosen for its unique ability to convey a particular aspect of her story, weaving together themes of lost history, ancestral connections, motherhood, and the passage of time.

This openness to diverse materials allows Waup to explore new artistic avenues, continuously evolving her practice and connecting with different audiences.

"As a multidisciplinary artist, I'm guided to utilize so many different mediums—they really talk to me—and in turn they're able to explain my story in different ways," Lisa Waup says.

In the 2024 NATSIAA, Waup's participation underscores the importance of art as a medium for storytelling and cultural preservation.

Her inclusion in this prestigious event highlights her significant contributions to the art world and her role in advancing the dialogue around contemporary Indigenous art in Australia.
