Child protection campaigners believe many more offenders who pose a risk to children overseas have been deterred from traveling by the legislation.
Tony Kirwan isn't your average Queensland dad.
He spends his evenings in some of the seediest bars in Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia, hoping to find and rescue children trapped in the sex trade.
"There are many times that we will go into the bars and brothels, the go-go bars and there are Aussies there. It’s one of the most common nationalities that we will find in these places."
He says seeing his compatriots in places where children are sold for sex makes him ashamed.
"It really is embarrassing to be an Aussie and a man in these brothels. The sort of like things they get up to, right in front of everybody that is there. You name it, I’ve seen guys doing it right in front of everybody. It’s a shameful thing."
