The Australian Border Force has confirmed a boat carrying 20 Sri Lankan asylum seekers headed for northwest Australia was intercepted last week.

Twenty Sri Lankan asylum seekers have been flown back to their home country after their boat was intercepted en route to Australia.

An Australian Border Force spokesperson confirmed the vessel, which was carrying at least one baby, was spotted last week in the Indian Ocean heading for the northwest coast.

"Twenty potential illegal immigrants have been returned to Sri Lanka following a failed attempt at a dangerous and illegal maritime people smuggling venture to Australia," the ABF spokesperson said.
